Making fire

Fire has been a way of life since the beginning-It is essential to survival in every way. But it also is one of the most dangerous elements. Which is why you must be careful and not foolish in using it.

Bow Drill: A bow drill causes fire to be made by an ember, which is made by friction from the drill, spun by the bow. You push the bow back and forth, causing the stick to spin. The wood the stick is spinning on will begin to smoke, and eventually an ember will be created, which will then be place in the tinder and blown carefully until it starts to burn.

Flint: Is used to create a spark by the way of striking. Steel is struck on the flint, which creates a spark. Holding the flint above the tinder, strike it with the back of your knife. It will take some practice getting the sparks to land were you want them to. When the tinder starts to smoke, gently blow on the spark until the tinder starts to burn.

Sun: Using a can, manifying glass, glasses, or anyother peice of glass, you can create a small ray of sun that will cause the tinder to catch fire. Basiclly, its the same thing you would do if you were melting wax soldiers.

Be sure to control your fire. When I start a fire, I always keep water handy in case of an emergency. Like Smokey says, 'Only you can prevent forest fires!'
